The most amazing thing happened at my last session with my fantastic group of adults and seniors with developmental disabilities.  Some of the clients in the group have dementia and have issues with orientation, perseveration and holding an intelligible conversation.  We had spent the session working on four songs we will be singing and performing for their holiday festival.  After the session wrapped up, I was helping some of the clients back to their rooms, when a client with dementia approached me.  Normally this client perseverates about the guitar and is difficult to understand because he mumbles.  We began walking to his room together and had a wonderful conversation about the residence where he was staying and things he liked about it.  This was a true testament to the power of music to improve orientation, intelligibility and affect.  Not only was present and easily understood, he had a huge smile on his face and seemed truly happy.
