Many times in music therapy, a client will divulge a part of themselves that was previously hidden from view. It’s easy to overlook or minimize someone who appears to be “out of it”. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work with individuals who have severe and profound developmental disabilities, is the joy that everyone experiences when a client responds in a way that no-one has seen before. It’s as if they are saying, “I’m here and I get it!” These individuals have a place in the world just like everyone else.

The following story from CBS’s News, touched me in a similar way. Two older men who have dementia and are unresponsive to their loved ones were able to connect due to an experience in their past. This is a wonderful story and shows that there are more possibilities in life than we can imagine.
