Halloween is such a fun time of year.  This year I found a tarantula puppet that was so scary; I left on the price tag just in case it was too much for the kids.  Boy was I wrong!  (Except for one staff member who ran out of the room when she saw it!)

One activity we’ve been using it with this week is the song, The Eensy Weensy Spider.  There are three verses that go along with corresponding hand and arm movements:

  • Eensy weensy spider- regular song and movements
  • Teeny tiny spider- using a squeaky high voice and small finger movements
  • Great big spider – big deep voice and big arm movements

But the most fun we’ve had with my spider friend is during a group activity with the parachute.  The spider is placed in the middle of the parachute and we work together to keep him on it as we shake it in various ways.  Of course, half the fun is when the spider lands in student’s lap or right next to him or her.  Then they get a chance to throw the spider back onto the parachute.  The smiles and giggles are contagious!  I’ve been using age appropriate Halloween music to accompany this activity, so it can be used with all age groups.

This is a great activity for improving attention, social awareness and motor skills.  Have fun and Happy Halloween!
