We’ve been having a lot of fun this week making shakers and then playing them along with holiday music. This craft project is super easy and gives everyone a chance to be creative. Here’s how we did it:
1. Put on some background music. We played holiday favorites.
2. Give clients a choice between 2 different color 16oz. Solo cups. We used red and green. Give each client 2 cups.
3. Fill one of the cups with 1/2 cup of rice.
4. Place the other cup on top of the cup that is filled with rice and tape cups together with colored duct tape.
5. Have clients decorate cups with different kinds of foam stickers. (You can find them at stores like Michael’s, Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby, in the “Foamies” craft or seasonal aisles.)
6. Play live or recorded music and have fun playing along! Some of my student’s favorite songs for this activity were Feliz Navidad and moving to the Christmas Conga.
This activity can be adapted to the strengths and needs of each client. It works on a number of goals including: opportunities for choice, fine motor, following directions, impulse control, improving self esteem. One word of caution, if the cups are squeezed too tightly multiple times, they may crack and the rice will spill out.
